Happy Gilmore 2 Teed Up with Adam Sandler, Shooter McGavin’s Actor Says

Shooter McGavin actor Christopher McDonald says a Happy Gilmore 2 script is in the works.

McDonald spoke about the surprise sequel news during an interview on Audacy’s 92.3 (via Deadline). He says that original star, Adam Sandler, showed him a draft of the script recently.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’” he said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”

Although McDonald does seem to have been a bit concerned, suggesting his comments be “cut” because he “didn’t want to be a liar,” he does at least confirm that he’d like to see Happy Gilmore 2 happen. The actor added, “he did show me that [script], and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

Deadline’s sources say that, should Happy Gilmore 2 proceed, it will be for Netflix through Sandler and Happy Madison Productions. So, while it would likely be quite some time before Happy Gilmore 2 hits the green, McDonald still offers a promising update for one of the most quotable comedies of the last 30 years.

The news arrives 28 years after the Sandler-led golfing comedy originally struck audiences with its writing and star-studded cast. In Happy Gilmore, Sandler plays the titular former hockey player who becomes a golfing prodigy overnight. McDonald’s Shooter McGavin essentially serves as the movie’s villain, but there are plenty of other colorful characters at play, too.

Other familiar names who make an appearance include Julia Bowen, Kevin Nealon, Ben Stiller, and Carl Weathers, who passed away just last month. The movie also comes with a host of cameos, with the most memorable being an appearance from former The Price Is Right Host, Bob Barker, who also passed away last year.

It’s still too early to tell when and where we’ll be able to watch Happy Gilmore 2 if work on it continues. For more while we wait, be sure to check out our list of Sandler’s best films, where we (spoilers) ranked Happy Gilmore at number one.
