James Gunn Says Marvel Didn’t Give the First MCU F-Bomb: ‘I Took It’

DC Studios co-CEO and director James Gunn has explained how the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first f-bomb came to be.

Replying to a fan on Threads who asked if he was surprised Marvel didn’t give Samuel L Jackson the first MCU f-bomb, Gunn made clear it was his own initiative that led to the scene.

“Marvel didn’t give anyone the first f**k. I took it,” said Gunn in the post. “If they had pushed back I would have fought it tooth and nail but they were cool and did not.”

After more than 100 hours of MCU content, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord got to say the curse word in the latest (and possibly last) Guardians of the Galaxy entry. He blurts it out, and light spoilers for the scene ahead, when Nebula can’t figure out how to open a car door, screaming at her: “open the f**king door.”

The swear seemingly came pretty naturally, as Gunn explained in a follow-up Threads post it didn’t require any reshoots. “He only said it once,” Gunn said.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrived on Disney+ on August 2 as likely the last film in the franchise to do so. Though not ever character is written off, Gunn’s new role at Marvel rival DC means he likely won’t return to the MCU anytime soon.

In our 8/10 review of the film, IGN said: “The Guardians of the Galaxy deliver their swan song in Vol. 3 and it’s a rockin’ good time. Rocket’s tragic origins, great action and effects, and James Gunn’s soulful style send them out on an emotional high note.”
