Here’s some good news for those who prefer to collect their media physically: Prey, Hulu’s acclaimed Predator prequel, is getting a 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release more than a year after it debuted on the streaming platform, Disney announced today.
It’ll arrive on the physical platforms on Oct. 3, and will feature more than two hours of bonus content including a making-of feature; a panel discussion with director Dan Trachtenberg, star Amber Midthunder, and others who worked on the film; and an alternate opening scene, in addition to two deleted scenes.
While the news might seem silly if you’re already subscribed to Hulu, physical media still very much matters in 2023. As IGN streaming editor Amelia Emberwing explained in a recent column, “You’re no longer purchasing media; you’re licensing it. That license exists until the company no longer exists, or until the company no longer decides to support the title.”
This is especially true as companies like Warner Bros. and Disney slash content from streaming platforms like Max and Disney+ – even content that was originally produced for those streaming platforms. Take Crater, for instance, an original sci-fi movie that was pulled from Disney+ less than two months after its release. It’s why creators like Mike Flanagan have “tried for years” to ensure physical releases of content produced for streaming platforms. Here’s hoping Hollywood’s streamers will catch on.
Prey was released back in August of 2022 to strong reviews, with IGN’s Tom Jorgensen giving it an 8/10 and saying, “with plenty of the Predator franchise’s signature brutal kills, a simple but never simplistic story, and a star-making turn from Amber Midthunder… Prey slays.”
