Starting Aug. 3, Mario and Luigi fans across the globe can watch the world-famous plumbers journey through the Mushroom Kingdom — from their own homes. The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be available for streaming exclusively on Peacock effective tomorrow, as originally announced last month.
It’s already been available on digital platforms to rent or buy, but Peacock subscribers will be able to watch the biggest hit of the year (although Barbie is hot on its tail) as part of the price of their subscription.
In addition to the film, Peacock users will be able to access a range of bonus content that was previously available through the DVD and Blu-Ray “Power-Up Edition.” Behind-the-scenes interviews with the film’s leading voice actors will be available, as well as a sing-along lyric video set to “Peaches,” a passionate serenade from Jack Black’s Bowser to Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy).
Streamers will also be able to partake in an immersive mode of viewing — power-ups and all — through The Super Mario Bros. Movie Field Guide. The bonus feature allows viewers to interact with the world around them as the film’s cast explains the uses of each of the power-ups specific to their characters.
Directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, and Pierre Leduc, the film features a star-studded cast of voice actors, including Black, Taylor-Joy, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen. Chris Pratt and Charlie Day play the film’s titular brothers Mario and Luigi, respectively.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the 10th animated film to ever pass the $1 billion milestone at the global box office — a feat it accomplished in 26 days. The Illumination movie is so far the highest-grossing movie of the year both domestically and globally.
And while there’s something mournful about the film making its transition from theatrical screenings to family movie night showings, perhaps Mario and co. are best enjoyed from at home while wrapped in a blanket, similar to their video game counterparts. Either way, it’s time for a rewatch.
