Why Star Wars Fans Are So Excited by Dialogue From Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka

The latest teaser trailer for Ahsoka confirmed Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker is returning in some capacity, leaving Star Wars fans excited about how this comeback will build off past events.

Ahsoka Tano is one of the main characters (if not the main character) in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. She has a deep history with Anakin Skywalker, so Hayden Christensen’s inclusion in the live-action Disney+ series seemed like a foregone conclusion. However, that hasn’t stopped fans from celebrating his return.

We hear some new dialogue from Christensen in the latest Ahsoka trailer, though we don’t see any new footage of his character on screen. The majority believe this snippet is from a flashback sequence revisiting part of the Clone Wars timeline in live-action as Ahsoka draws on memories and recalls past interactions with Anakin.

“In this war, you will face more than just droids,” Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker says. “As your master, it is my responsibility to prepare you. I won’t always be there to look out for you. Don’t be afraid. Trust your instincts. I know you can do this, Ahsoka.”

Ahsoka has a storied relationship with Anakin, tracing back to The Clone Wars movie when newly minted Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker is assigned to mentor Padawan Ahsoka Tano. Though the two predictably butt heads at first, Anakin eventually finds a kindred spirit in Ahsoka, who is eager to prove herself worthy to be his apprentice.

The training pays off as Ahsoka becomes a formidable fighter, with her sword-fighting prowess rivalling the very best in the galaxy. However, by the end of Season 5 of The Clone Wars, Ahsoka chooses to walk away from the Jedi Order after being falsely implicated as the culprit in a bombing at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

For Anakin, a Jedi doomed to fall to the Dark Side because of his inability to let go of his personal attachments, losing Ahsoka is another heavy blow. It is suspected that this act deepened his resentment toward the Jedi Council, with his descent into darkness eventually coming to a head in Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

The last time they saw each other Ahsoka confronted Anakin/Vader on Malachor in Star Wars Rebels, so it will be interesting to see if that wasn’t actually the last time these two former friends faced each other. There is also the possibility that Ahsoka is speaking to Anakin’s Force Ghost, or she is revisiting the World Between Worlds.

In Rebels, Ahsoka is saved from death after her duel with Darth Vader when her friend Ezra Bridger pulls her into a realm known as the World Between Worlds. If the portal returns in the upcoming Disney+ series, it could offer Ahsoka a chance to look into her past with Anakin and make it possible for new storylines to emerge.

We won’t have too long to find out as Ahsoka’s two-episode premiere will drop on Disney+ on August 23.
