Zack Snyder Thinks Gears of War and Halo Would Make Great Video Game Movies

As the video game adaptation genre continues to grow, Netflix has already announced a Gears of War live-action film, and Paramount+ released last year a Halo TV series. Both video games series are ripe for takes on the big screen – at least, according to none other than Zack Snyder.

The Man of Steel director and his wife and co-producer Deborah Snyder stopped by IGN’s gamescom studio to talk about his Rebel Moon films as well as the video game that’s being developed within their universe (watch the full interview below). While on the subject of the crossover of games and movies, IGN’s Daemon Hatfield asked them what gaming properties they think would make great movies.

The Snyders paused for a moment before Zack answered, “Well, there are a lot.”

“We’ve talked about a bunch of… Gears has always come up in our sort of circle,” he continued. “I was always interested in the Halo franchise… They of course kind of made that, but it was something I always thought could be incredible.”

Netflix’s Gears of War movie was first officially unveiled in 2022, in addition to an adult animated series based on the game. The last we heard about it was that Jon Spaihts, best known for 2016’s Doctor Strange and 2021’s Dune, was on board to write the script, but we still haven’t heard about who could direct the adaptation. With Snyder already in the Netflix ecosystem thanks to Rebel Moon, we can’t help but speculate if he’s eyeing that project. Still, Rebel Moon will likely keep him busy for awhile, with his plans to turn it into a franchise for Netflix.

But if he does decide to turn his attention to Gears of War, he’s got an easy star in Dave Bautista, who has made it extremely clear that he really, really, really, wants to play Marcus Fenix.

Halo, meanwhile, is already in full swing on Season 2, with production having started in September 2022. A Season 2 release date, yet, however, has not yet been announced.
